A few weeks ago, my CyberPower UPS started making an awful screeching noise. As you might have guessed, the fan had malfunctioned and needed to be replaced. This is a cheap part—likely around $10, including a hefty markup. However, after searching online, I discovered that there were no available references for that fan (my UPS is a CP1500PFCRM2U).

When I contacted CyberPower’s customer support, I received a voicemail stating that they don’t provide that information. I had asked for the fan’s reference number, voltage, and dimensions. There was no further communication or follow-up.
In response, I took two actions. First, I removed CyberPower from my home lab and replaced it with the newly released Unifi 2U UPS, which immediately resolved the noise issue. Now, the UPS is fully integrated into my home network, and no need for an expensive network interface card (NIC) and management software subscription 😊.

Second, I disassembled the CyberPower unit—though do this at your own risk—and found the fan’s specifications: HXH HDH0812LD (DC 12V/0.09A). The website for the Chinese manufacturer, Haixinghe Industrial Co., Ltd. (海星和实业有限公司), is only accessible via HTTP (http://www.hxhfan.com/), and modern browsers won’t allow me to load their pages. Therefore, I wouldn’t consider purchasing anything through their site, and it’s unclear if they even deal with individuals.

As a solution, I opted for the Noctua NF-A8 FLX, a premium quiet fan that meets the requirements: it features a 3-pin connector, measures 80mm. It is thicker than the original, but it fits in the PSU’s case. In fact, it fits perfectly and securely—no screws are needed since its rubber corners hold the fan in place snugly. I reused the power connector from the HXH fan and soldered the positive and ground leads for the Noctua fan, applying heat-shrink wraps to prevent shorts—a straightforward operation.

The result? It reduced the noise level from approximately 60 dB to around 48 dB, while my new Unifi UPS operates at about 49 dB at 70% load and above. If anyone has the same CyberPower UPS and needs the fan reference, it is available here 😊.
