On my way home yesterday, I photographed the sidewalk at Millikan Way Max station as it piqued my interest. It was a sonogram of a Goldfinch’s call embedded in a city sidewalk. I then noticed several other birds’ sonograms on the sidewalk as well. Intrigued by how far I could push this idea, I reconstructed the sound based solely on this very low-resolution visual trace. First, I examined the frequencies by eye, noting the images’ curves and bursts of energy. The initial result was functional—the call structure was present—but it sounded rough and synthetic, resembling an old video game soundtrack rather than the lively trill of a real bird.

From image: { 1800,2200,2500,2600,2700,2900,3200,3400,3700,3600,3500,3200,2900,2500,2200,1800,1500 }

Unsatisfied with this output, I took an additional step. I increased the resolution, interpolating between frequency points to smooth out the transitions, and added a natural vibrato to avoid the flat, mechanical tone. The improvement was noticeable, but the artificiality lingered, so I continued refining the sound.

In the final iteration, my goal was to make the sound breathe. I shaped the envelope of each note to soften the attacks and fades, introduced subtle white noise to break the sterile precision, and layered in harmonics to replicate the natural resonance of a bird’s vocal cords. Finally, I applied a light reverb, giving the sound a sense of space—as if it were echoing softly through a park or garden.

From sidewalk art to a living soundscape, this small yet satisfying experiment highlighted the connection between sight, sound, and data—an exercise particularly appreciated. It reminded me that even the most ordinary details around us can be brought back to life with a bit of curiosity and creative effort.

Enjoy the other sidewalk art brought to life!
