We paid a visit to the Pompeii exhibition @ OMSI in Portland OR. A pretty humbling experience, imagining the everyday existence of 20,000 humans in their city at the foot of the Vesuvius. In a day, their prosperous town was sent to oblivion. I cannot prevent myself from thinking about what one fact bit I’ve learned today: there was no word for volcano in Latin prior to the events. It is indeed difficult to size a danger when you lack a word that describes it.
