The Fantastic Voyage (1966, directed by Richard Fleischer) is a sci-fi movie about a shrunken submarine and crew trying to save the life of a scientist threatened by a brain clot after an assassination attempt. The tech is definitively from 1966, and you won’t be able to spot a single computer in this flick. So why this movie in this collection? Well, sometimes, missing information is information! In this case, we can spot the precursor of the pocket calculator in the hands of Edmond O’Brien (General Carter). Indeed, after some unexpected events, O’Brien needs to compute how much time the team has left before they start to unshrink and kill the scientist they are supposed to save. Six years before the availability of the HP-35, the general uses a slide ruler and a chronograph to solve his problem. Quite refreshing!
